After contacting three companies, I’ve finally managed to acquire the data I was looking for.
At first I was hoping to gain access to live updated data sets with the vessel name, current position and commodity, but after contacting Port Metro Vancouver I realized this would be a difficult task. Even though this information is openly displayed in online, companies are reluctant to pass over the files. I think this is mainly because individuals/ companies are able to subscribe to automatic identification data services, which for a fee, grants access to heavy data sets showing vessel activity 24/7. Unfortunately, these services are much too expensive.
Since realizing real time data would be potentially inaccessible, I shifted focus and decided to gather vessel data for the ports surrounding New Westminster for all of 2013. I contact Fraser Surrey Docks, located across the river from the FRDC, as well as Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics on Annacis Island, which mainly ships vehicles. After emailing FSD a couple times, I finally received a positive response, and received a 15 page file containing all the vessel data I was hoping to acquire. I am still waiting on a response from WWL though.
Hopefully this week I’ll be able to make more progress on incorporating the data into my program.
